I have been meaning to get my blog updated on a more week to week basis. I think the thing that has been holding me back is time passing and not doing, then the building anxiety that I’m not doing, and altogether just ignoring it. Big issue for people who need to self start, I would assume. But with the new semester starting, why not take the opportunity and do it. So here we go!
This is going thread is going to be focused on my Animation, Gaming, and Time-Based Media class, so it’s going to be specific to that. I will take the time to create some other threads in the process, but that’s another subject. Get on with it you say. Okay.
Here is a quick intro to who I am, my curricular concentration, and a couple of my favorites things.
1. Who Are You?
My name is Rob Jollie. I am an Alaskan Native and native Alaskan. Meaning that I am of indigenous descent (Aleut/Haida) and born in Alaska. I’m a bit of an oddball with a goofy sense of humor. I am a musician, photographer, and movie maker and want to pursue any endeavors that involves those activities. I’ve been at KVCC since 2019 and I am looking to graduate by the end of 2021. I live in Kalamazoo with my wife, Christina, and our wonderful animal friends: Maynard, Inca, and Molly
2. What is your concentration at KVCC?
Screen writing/Film making.
3. What is your favorite game to play and why?
Right now, my favorite game to play is Rocket League (2015) for Nintendo Switch. It is a addictively fun game of soccer playing cars. I always tended to lean towards sports games but I love all games. I think my all-time favorite game has been Final Fantasy II (Japan, 1988) for Gameboy.
4. What is your favorite TV show and why?
The absolute best show on tv right now is Fargo (FXX, 2014). It is based on the 1996 movie by the Coen Brothers. The show is not a reboot/remake, but it is stylistically based in the same world. Noah Hawley masterfully captures the aesthetic of the original as well as the mythos of the film as well. If anyone who is a writer or enjoys great well written stories, this is the show for that person.
5. What is your favorite movie and why?
My favorite movie is Tombstone (1993). Kurt Russell basically directs this film but he also gives one of the best performances in one of the last westerns of the modern era, as retired lawman, Wyatt Earp. But Val Kilmer steals the show with his incredible performance as Doc Holiday. Val Kilmer is one of the best character actors of my generation and it’s on full display in this film. He delivers some of the coolest lines someone has ever delivered on film, “I’m your Huckleberry”
6. What is your favorite animation (long/short/etc.) and why?
I’ve recently gotten into Studio Ghibli, and would say Spirited Away (Japan, 2001), but I haven’t sat with it enough to say it’s my favorite. I also really enjoyed the French animated film Fantastic Planet (Prague, 1973), with it’s study in curiosity and beautiful frames. The animation that I would say is my favorite is Batman: The Animated Series (Fox, 1992), because I was at the right age (11 years old) when that show came out and I loved it. And to this day, it’s my favorite version of how Batman and his rogue gallery of villains has been portrayed outside of the comic book. The artwork was cool and in an old-school style, the voices were awesome (Kevin Conroy & Mark Hamill) and it was right after school. Love it to this day.
